The book begins with Darren and his friends fleeing the tunnels.
Vancha captures and tortures a vampet, Mark Ryter, at their base. They find out that only the Vampaneze Lord could kill them. Steve had set a trap for them at the base, by informing the police that they were the killers. They were then captured by the police and taken to prison (Vancha escapes with Alice Burgess).
Darren then breaks away from prison along with Harkat Mulds and Mr. Crepsley, but then they were pursued by the police and an angry mob. Later on when they finally escaped from the police and mobs of people. The trio then go down into to the tunnels once more to meet up with Vancha. They got to the Cavern of Rebtribution and fought the vampaneze and vampets that were there. Mr. Crepsley fought the Vampaneze Lord, Steve Leopard and Vancha's brother, Gannen Harst on a platform over a pit filled in fire with steel tiped stakes. Mr. Crepsley kills the Vampaneze Lord, but Steve knocks him into the pit full of sharpened, steel-tipped, fire-coated stakes leading to his death.
Everyone then leaves the cavern but not before Steve and Gannen Harst takes Darren aside. Steve reveals that he is the true Vampaneze Lord, then Harst knocks Darren unconscious by using his special breath which can make the person who breathes in it faint.
Darren leaves with Vancha, Harkat, Debbie and Alice Burgess. They leave Mr. Crepsley's remains in the pit of stakes.
